A redirection of effort occurred and Be started to focus it's efforts on the expanding market of internet appliances. This market was particularly well suited to the capabilities of the BeOS because of the requirement for a responsive system that was good at multimedia; additionally there was no need for backward compatibility with Windows or Mac OS applications.
In order to show the Be offering in the internet appliance market, we made two prototypes. The first was a kitchen appliance, form design by Studio Red, that housed a small computer showing off how BeOS could be used in such devices. I was the lead interaction designer, using a contractor to complete all of the necessary artwork. The finished product ran at Comdex and other industry shows.
The second prototype was a software only, web-based interface that could be loaded onto third-party web appliances from companies such as Compaq and Sony. The basic framework and interaction was designed by me, we contracted to another interface designer for visual design and implementation. I was responsible for all design decisions and management of the project.
